Importance of Religion, an article by Krisha Shah

 Importance of Religion

by Krisha Shah

In my life, religion is extremely important. I have completed fasts, went to the temple, attended religious events, and went to religious school since I was a child. It is something that has been a part of my life for longer than I can remember. When I was younger, I always saw religion as something that restricted me. In my religion, Jainism, I do not eat underground vegetables, meat, and foods with eggs, which has often prevented me from going to birthday parties or going out to eat at restaurants. In addition to this, there are certain concepts and ideas that I have to follow. Initially, all these rules made me despise my religion, but now I see that religion is more than just these restrictions. Through religion, I have learned concepts that have enabled me to improve my mental health. Instead of always thinking of the worst, I am able to form a more positive and hopeful mindset. Studies have even shown how following religion has improved confidence, self esteem, and depression levels (“Adolescents”). There is more to religion than just restrictions. Religion contains rules and concepts, which can guide individuals to develop a stronger mindset.
