Treasured Trust
By: Aditi Anumolu
When I turned fourteen, my mom gave me a necklace. It was something I never expected her to give. Something I never expected her to trust me with. Growing up, it was always a piece that I felt like was untouchable. I believed that I could only ever see it, but I would never be able to wear it since it was something she held very close to her heart.
However, on my fourteenth birthday, she pulled me aside after our family dinner and gave me the necklace with a smile. I didn’t believe she would actually give me one of her prized possessions, so I was very confused. I looked at her curiously, and she said that it was mine to keep and wear as long as I was responsible and careful with it. At that moment, I felt so much joy and love for my mom. I couldn’t believe that she trusted me with something so precious to her.
Now I wear the necklace every day and I rarely take it off. When I do, I make sure it is in a safe place because I know how important it is to my mom that I cherish it. This necklace has quickly become one of my own prized possessions, and the meaning and value behind it have made me love it even more. I am glad that my mom gave it to me on my fourteenth birthday because it was a truly defining moment in my life, and I will always remember it.
