The Gap in Homework by: Krisha Shah
Homework can be beneficial, but can also be harmful. The benefits to homework span a large range. It involves improving the students' understanding of the topic to reinforce fundamental skills. However, homework can also be harmful and may not benefit the kid at all. For me, limited amounts of homework to reinforce skills learned during school is normal, but the growing attention to homework and pressure towards adding more until the amount is unbearable is the issue. As an elementary school student, we only received 10 to 15 minutes of homework, but as we got to higher grades and in high school our homework took up the majority of the day and sometimes even went into the night. While homework has a large variety of benefits, the shift towards unbearable amounts of homework has the opposite effect of becoming harmful. Schools should focus on reducing the amount of homework so that children can still enjoy their childhood or teen years, while still learning and expanding their knowledge.
