Why is Russia invading Ukraine? by Sravya Chunduru

Why is Russia invading Ukraine?

As Russian soldiers pour into Ukrainian soil, the question that is heavy in everyone’s mind is: Why? What does Russia hope to achieve in beginning a war that will eventually lead to the death of so many?

Russian President Vladimir Putin announced a “special military operation” whose “goal is to protect people who have been abused by the genocide of the Kyiv regime for eight years” (Vox). Basically, he is saying that he wants to strive for demilitarization and de-Nazification of Ukraine as well as bring justice for the innocent that were affected by all these tragedies.

This however seems very odd as it has no reality to it. There is no ongoing genocide in Ukraine. In fact, the Ukrainian President is Jewish himself and often talks to great measures about how his own grandfather fought against Hitler’s army.

Currently, Biden has made it very clear to America that things will change in order to raise money for the war. He has made it very clear though, that he has no intention of sending American soldiers to Ukraine but rather sending them to defend and reassure their NATO allies.
