In The Heights, originally a Broadway musical by Lin-Manuel Miranda follows the story of a close-knit Latino community in Washington Heights NY. The main cast includes Usnavi, Sonny, Vanessa, Benny, and Nina Rosario as they all try to reach their own dreams, while also facing many struggles shown throughout the film. The story is about a man named Usnavi who owns a convenience store and is saving up money to move to the Dominican Republic while also leaving behind the community he grew up with.
Though it revolves around Usnavi, a few other important characters each have their own subplot to the musical; Vanessa wants to become a fashion designer and builds a relationship with Usnavi. Nina is a college dropout from Stanford due to feeling left out and racism. Finally, sonny tries to help Usnavi, while also trying to live as an undocumented immigrant.
Even though each character deals with different issues in the film, they're all connected and flow really well with the help of the songs performed. The soundtrack for the movie is really well done and extremely catchy! So catchy that right after I finished the movie I instantly added my favorite songs onto my Spotify playlist. The songs and choreography are all very unique and crafted.
Overall the musical was one of my favorite films this year, and I can't wait for what Lin has next to adapt into a movie.
Overall Rating: 9/10
