Why Coraline Is My All-Time Favorite Movie by Sachi Dixit

Why Coraline Is My All-Time Favorite Movie by Sachi Dixit

The movie, Coraline, was directed by Henry Selick and is based on the 2002 novella by Neil Gaiman. This story focuses on young Caroline Jones, whose family has just moved into the Pink Palace. Coraline feels ignored by both of her parents since they are busy writing a blog about gardening. But this all changes when she finds a secret door in her new house that leads to an “Other World” where everything seems perfect at first. Eventually, everything goes downhill when Coraline finds out that her Other Mother, who has buttons for eyes, is trying to steal her soul. Coraline has to outsmart her, save her real parents, and escape back to her own world.

I love this movie for many reasons, one of them being how creative everything is. First of all, it’s a stop motion movie, which means that every little scene was handmade by real-life people. This is mind-blowing to me because it takes so much time, effort, and dedication to make something like this. When watching this movie, the viewers can legit see every small detail, which just makes the movie that much more magical. Next, I think the plot of this movie is so cool, because I have never seen anything like it before, and I have watched a ton of movies! This movie teaches the lesson to never take anything for granted, but shows it to the viewers in such a unique way. We get a whole “Other World” that has everyone Coraline knows, but with button eyes! Soon enough, we learn the “Other World” is evil, and all Caroline Jones could think about is her real parents and how much she misses them. This also shows her character development, as she goes from hating how boring her parents are to wishing to see them again.

Another reason why I love this movie is how creepy but addictive it is. As the first time I ever watched this movie, I was barely 6 and was super scared of it, but something about this movie made me want to keep on watching it. And Im so grateful I did because once I got to the end, I was like, “yup, that was totally worth all the jumpscares.” It’s one of those movies that scares you, comforts you, and pulls you back every single time. Even now, I know exactly what’s going to happen, but I still get that weird mix of chills and excitement, which makes it my all-time favorite.
