Badminton Should Totally Be a Varsity Sport by Parnika Thakare

Badminton Should Totally Be a Varsity Sport

It honestly bugs me how badminton is treated in most American schools. Many people think it’s just something you play in your backyard for fun, but it’s actually a fast, intense sport that takes real skill, practice and intelligence. I’ve been playing Badminton for around eight-nine years, and it’s been a huge part of my life. Back in India, I even played at the state and national level and even won state level, and that experience helped me learn a lot of things which still do and will help me in future too.

Here, though, badminton doesn’t get much attention. There’s no school team, no varsity status. Why not? If we had proper school teams and inter-school competitions, it would give students a chance to grow, compete, and take the sport seriously. Everyone says it is not a popular sport, but for it to be popular schools need to have a badminton team and badminton has to become a varsity sport. It would be so great to see badminton treated like few other sports like basketball or track, with practices, jerseys, and a real school spirit behind it.

Not all students want to play football or soccer. Some of us do connect with other sports, and badminton is one of them. Giving it a varsity status and building school teams could actually help so many students find their thing — and I really think it’s time we made that happen.
